HAProxy is an open-source TCP proxy and HTTP reverse proxy that sits between clients and backend servers. It forwards requests, balances load, and can centralize functions such as TLS termination, health checks, and routing based on headers or connection rules.
In cyber security, HAProxy matters because it is a traffic chokepoint: if defenders trust it, attackers who compromise it can observe, relay, or selectively alter communications without immediately touching every backend. That makes it valuable for espionage, credential capture, and stealthy traffic manipulation. Defenders should treat the proxy as a high-value asset, monitor for binary or configuration changes, review startup paths and modules, and verify TLS and routing behavior for integrity drift. Because it is expected to be noisy and always on, malicious activity inside HAProxy can blend into normal operations more easily than malware on an endpoint.
