Hands-on Exploitation

Interactive attacker activity after discovery, when a human operator actively uses a weakness or access path.

Hands-on exploitation is the phase of an attack where a human operator actively uses a discovered weakness or access path, rather than relying only on automation. After scanners, exploit tools, or stolen credentials reveal a promising target, the operator may log in, run commands, pivot inside the network, or test whether the access is stable and valuable. This is often described as interactive post-discovery activity.

It matters because it usually marks the shift from broad reconnaissance to focused intrusion. Automation can find many possible targets, but hands-on exploitation lets attackers adapt to defenses, choose the highest-value systems, and avoid noisy mistakes. In real attacks, it often follows vulnerability scanning, botnet-based proxying, or initial access through exposed services. Defenders look for signs such as unusual login behavior, command-line activity, lateral movement, and changes that indicate a person, not a script, is steering the compromise. Strong patching, segmentation, and monitoring can make this stage much harder.
