Hall effect sensor

a contactless sensor that detects magnetic field changes to infer position.

A Hall effect sensor is a contactless sensor that measures changes in a magnetic field to infer position, movement, or presence. In hardware design, it is often used instead of a mechanical switch or potentiometer because it avoids direct wear and can provide smoother, longer-lasting readings. In joysticks, keys, and control knobs, it helps the device tell where a part is without needing physical contact in the sensing element.

In cyber security, Hall sensors matter because they are common in laptops, mobile devices, industrial controls, and access hardware. They can support lid detection, tamper sensing, and reliable input in environments where dust or wear would break mechanical parts. Their weakness is also their simplicity: a strong external magnet or poor calibration can influence readings, so defenders should validate sensor data and design for spoofing resistance. For attackers, that makes the sensor a possible target for signal manipulation or bypassing safety checks.
