Grid planning

The long-term design and management of electricity supply and infrastructure.

Grid planning is the long-term design and management of electricity supply, transmission, distribution, and capacity. It decides where power should come from, how it will move, and what upgrades are needed to keep demand balanced, reliable, and affordable over time.

In cyber security, grid planning matters because modern power systems are digital systems. Planning now includes substations, control centers, smart meters, remote sensors, and the software that connects them. Good planning helps defenders reduce single points of failure, segment critical networks, add redundancy, and prepare for outages or sabotage. Poor planning can leave utilities with exposed control paths, brittle legacy equipment, and slow recovery options. In attacks, adversaries often exploit weak visibility, old infrastructure, or poorly coordinated expansion; in defense, planners use architecture, resilience testing, and secure-by-design upgrades to make the grid harder to disrupt.
