Google Chat app

A software integration that extends Chat with actions, workflows, or user-facing interactions inside Workspace.

A Google Chat app is a software integration that extends Chat with actions, automated workflows, or interactive prompts inside Google Workspace. These apps can receive messages, present buttons or forms, and trigger backend systems in response to user input. In security terms, that makes Chat more than a discussion space: it can become an entry point to business processes such as ticketing, approvals, or access requests.

This matters because any app that can act on behalf of a user becomes part of the trust boundary. Defenders need to verify message identity, app permissions, audit logs, and data handling, especially when the app touches privileged workflows. Attackers may try to abuse a trusted chat integration through phishing, impersonation, or malicious authorization prompts. Used correctly, a Google Chat app can improve speed and visibility; used poorly, it can weaken least privilege and create a new path to sensitive actions.
