Git server

A service that stores, serves, and manages Git repositories for development teams.

A Git server is a service that stores, serves, and manages Git repositories for development teams. In practice, it is more than file storage: it controls authentication, repository permissions, protected branches, tags, hooks, and often package or release distribution. Because many teams connect it to CI/CD, a Git server becomes a trust hub for source code and the automation that builds and ships it.

This matters in cyber security because a flaw in the Git server can affect code integrity, leak private repositories, expose secrets in commits or metadata, or let an attacker tamper with build and deployment workflows. In real attacks, adversaries may target authorization bugs, request handling errors, or workflow logic to gain broader access than simple repository browsing would suggest. Defenders reduce risk by patching quickly, limiting token scope, isolating runners, reviewing branch protection, and treating the Git server as critical infrastructure rather than an internal convenience.
