A gift voucher is a stored-value reward that can usually be redeemed only within a specific retailer, platform, or partner ecosystem. Unlike cash, it is tied to the issuer’s rules: it may have a fixed value, expiry date, territory limit, or only work for certain products and services.
In cyber security, gift vouchers matter because they are often used in promotions, loyalty schemes, and account sign-up incentives, which makes them a target for phishing and social engineering. Attackers may imitate a brand’s reward flow, ask victims to “confirm” a voucher code, or redirect them to fake redemption pages to steal credentials or the code itself. Defenders reduce risk by delivering voucher details only through official channels, protecting redemption portals with strong authentication, and warning users never to share codes or payment details to claim a reward. In banking and retail, clear voucher terms are also a trust control, helping users distinguish legitimate offers from lookalike scams.
