Get-MpComputerStatus

A PowerShell command that reports Microsoft Defender status and version details.

Get-MpComputerStatus is a Microsoft Defender PowerShell cmdlet that returns the current security status of an endpoint. It can show product and engine version details, signature freshness, update state, and other health indicators. Administrators use it to confirm whether Defender is running normally and whether its detection content is current.

This matters because an antivirus service can remain active while its protection data becomes stale. In attacks that interfere with Defender updates, defenders may still see a live agent but older signatures or platform components. Get-MpComputerStatus helps spot that condition by exposing version and freshness fields that can be checked against policy or baselines. In practice, it is useful for monitoring, incident response, and validation after hardening steps such as controlling untrusted code execution and watching for repeated update failures or low-disk conditions.
