GeoDjango

Django’s geographic extension for working with spatial data and GIS features.

GeoDjango is Django’s geographic extension for working with spatial data and GIS features. It adds model fields, queries, and helpers for maps, coordinates, raster data, and geospatial databases, so developers can build location-aware applications without leaving the Django framework.

In security terms, GeoDjango matters because specialized features often create a separate attack surface. Inputs that reach spatial lookups, raster handling, or file-backed GIS objects may exercise backend-specific code paths that are harder to audit than ordinary web views. If an application accepts untrusted geospatial data, a flaw can sometimes lead to denial of service, data exposure, or file access problems when the process has broad permissions. Defenders should patch quickly, limit filesystem and network reach, and review any code that parses or imports GIS files.
