FWaaS

Firewall-as-a-Service, a cloud-delivered firewall model that replaces or supplements local appliances.

FWaaS stands for Firewall-as-a-Service. It delivers firewall policy, traffic inspection, and often intrusion prevention from a cloud platform instead of a locally installed appliance. Organizations use it to protect users, branches, and cloud workloads without maintaining as much on-premises hardware.

In cyber security, FWaaS matters because it shifts enforcement into a provider’s control plane. That can make policy updates faster, logging more consistent, and deployment easier across distributed networks. It also changes the risk model: if the service is misconfigured, unavailable, or poorly integrated with identity and logging tools, defenders may lose visibility or enforcement at scale. Attackers benefit when cloud firewall policies are weak, overly broad, or not tuned for encrypted traffic and application context. Good deployments pair FWaaS with zero trust principles, careful rule design, and strong log export and rollback procedures.
