Free tier

A no-cost plan that usually limits users, devices, or features.

A free tier is a no-cost plan offered by a software or cloud service provider. It usually comes with limits on the number of users, devices, requests, storage, features, or support options. In security products, a free tier may be enough for testing, small teams, or basic remote access, but it often excludes advanced controls such as centralized logging, conditional access, or stronger administration features.

Free tiers matter in cyber security because cost and control are linked. Defenders may use them to evaluate tools quickly, but they must check whether the plan supports secure defaults, auditing, and policy enforcement. Attackers also benefit from free tiers when providers let them create low-cost or no-cost accounts for reconnaissance, disposable infrastructure, or automated abuse at scale. Security teams therefore treat free-tier signups as a normal part of risk management: useful for adoption, but never a substitute for understanding what is being exposed and what protections are missing.
