Formative assessment is ongoing evaluation used to understand performance while it is still developing, rather than waiting for a final score. In security, the idea applies to training, tabletop exercises, phishing simulations, secure coding reviews, and AI-assisted analysis, where frequent feedback helps identify weak points early.
It matters because cyber security depends on catching mistakes before they become incidents. A team that only measures outcomes at the end may miss gaps in judgment, configuration, or policy compliance. By contrast, formative assessments reveal whether users recognize phishing cues, whether analysts interpret alerts correctly, or whether a model is drifting into poor decisions. Defenders use that feedback to adjust controls, improve playbooks, and retrain people or systems. Attackers benefit when organizations lack this kind of continuous check: untested staff, stale procedures, and poorly tuned tools are easier to exploit.
