Forensic interpretation software

Software used to analyze laboratory data for investigative or legal purposes.

Forensic interpretation software is the application that reads laboratory output and turns it into results an analyst can review in an investigation or court context. In human-identification workflows, it may open files such as trace or genotype data, visualize them, apply quality checks, and help generate a report. It sits downstream of the instrument software, so it depends on the integrity of the files it receives.

This matters because a file can be altered before it reaches the analyst and still look normal inside the program. An attack that changes data in transit may not crash the workflow, but it can distort interpretation and weaken the evidentiary value of the result. Defenders protect this layer with digital signatures, access controls, audit logs, and chain-of-custody procedures. In practice, forensic interpretation software is both a scientific tool and a security checkpoint: it is where laboratories confirm that the data being reviewed is the same data produced by the instrument.
