Force sensing

a method of measuring applied pressure or load instead of stick travel.

Force sensing is a method of measuring applied pressure or load instead of physical travel. In input hardware, a force-sensing control can turn a push, squeeze, or press into an electrical signal without requiring the user to move a stick far from center. That makes it different from position-based designs such as potentiometers or Hall effect sensors, which report displacement. The sensing method affects calibration, ergonomics, durability, and how the device firmware interprets user intent.

In cyber security, force sensing matters because human-interface devices are trusted inputs. A malicious or compromised device can abuse the sensing model, misreport force levels, or generate inputs that look legitimate to software. Defenders care about this when building secure controllers, industrial interfaces, or accessibility devices, because robust sensing and calibration can reduce accidental triggers and make spoofed behavior easier to spot. As with any HID, the sensor is only one part of security; firmware, drivers, and validation rules matter too.
