Floating point unit

A processor component designed to handle decimal-style arithmetic.

A floating point unit, or FPU, is the CPU component that performs non-integer arithmetic such as decimals, fractions, exponents, and scaling operations. In older systems like the Intel 8087 coprocessor, the FPU could be a separate chip, while modern processors usually integrate it into the main CPU. FPUs are optimized for speed and precision tradeoffs that general-purpose integer logic does not handle as efficiently.

In cyber security, FPUs matter because attackers and defenders both depend on exact numeric behavior. Malware, sandboxes, emulators, and parsers may trigger subtle differences in rounding, overflow, or special values such as NaN and infinity. Those edge cases can expose compatibility bugs, analysis bypasses, or unexpected crashes. Defenders care because accurate emulation and testing of floating point behavior helps detect malicious code, reproduce failures, and verify that low-level software behaves consistently across hardware.
