Flexible demand management is the controlled shifting of electricity use to better match grid conditions, prices, or operational needs. Instead of consuming power on a fixed schedule, appliances, chargers, industrial loads, and building systems can be delayed, sped up, or reduced when the grid is stressed or when more renewable energy is available.
In cyber security, this matters because demand-response systems are software-driven and often connected to smart meters, controllers, cloud platforms, and utility APIs. If those systems are compromised, attackers could alter load schedules, disable demand shedding, or create synchronized spikes that strain the grid. Defenders protect these environments with strong authentication, device identity, segmentation, secure remote control, and monitoring for unusual command patterns. Flexible demand management is therefore both an efficiency tool and a critical control surface that must be secured like other operational technology.
