Firmware image

The packaged software image that runs on a device and often contains configuration or credential artifacts.

A firmware image is the packaged software that runs on an embedded device such as a camera, router, or IoT appliance. It usually includes the operating system, drivers, application code, and sometimes default settings, passwords, certificates, or other credential artifacts stored in files or partitions.

In cyber security, firmware images matter because they reveal how a device really behaves. Attackers may extract an image to search for hardcoded secrets, weak hashes, debug services, or hidden maintenance functions. If the image can be modified, it can also be used to plant backdoors or bypass checks at boot. Defenders analyze firmware images to find vulnerable components, compare versions, validate patches, and confirm whether sensitive data is being stored safely. Treating the image as a source of truth is often the fastest way to assess device risk.
