Firmware branch

A product-specific update line used to deliver fixes for a particular hardware family.

A firmware branch is a product-specific update line for one hardware family or model range. Instead of one universal firmware release, vendors maintain separate branches so fixes, security patches, and compatibility changes match the exact device generation, feature set, and safety behavior. In industrial systems, that distinction matters because a controller, sensor, or gateway may only accept updates from its own branch.

In cyber security, firmware branches are important for both defense and response. When a vulnerability is fixed, defenders must identify the correct branch before patching; installing the wrong image can fail or disrupt operations. Attackers may also target devices left on older branches, where known flaws remain unpatched. In practice, advisories often list the exact fixed branches for each model so operators can update safely without changing unrelated hardware behavior.
