Firewalling

rules that control what traffic can enter or leave a network or device.

Firewalling is the use of rules to control what traffic can enter or leave a network, device, or service. Those rules may allow, block, or limit connections based on address, port, protocol, application, or user context. In cyber security, firewalling is a basic control for reducing exposure and enforcing least privilege at the network edge and between internal segments.

It matters because many attacks begin with unsolicited access attempts, scanning, or connection abuse. Good firewalling can block inbound management interfaces, restrict remote access to approved sources, and limit outbound traffic from compromised systems. Defenders also use it to segment guest Wi-Fi, isolate servers, and create logging points that reveal suspicious patterns. Weak or overly broad rules, on the other hand, can leave internet-facing services easier to find and attack. Firewalling is strongest when combined with strong authentication, timely updates, and regular rule review.
