Firewall policy management is software used to define, review, approve, and maintain network access rules across many firewalls and segments. Instead of editing each device separately, security teams manage a central policy layer that records rule intent, exceptions, ownership, and change history.
This matters because firewall rules shape what can talk to what. Good policy management reduces configuration drift, helps remove stale or overly broad rules, and supports audits by showing why a rule exists and who approved it. In real defenses, teams use it to compare intended policy with what is actually enforced, detect risky changes, and automate deployment. In attacks, weak policy management can be exploited indirectly: if rules are poorly tracked, abandoned, or migrated badly, attackers may find unexpected paths through the network. Strong policy governance makes firewall behavior understandable, portable, and easier to verify.
