File lock

A control that prevents conflicting changes to a file while it is being edited or accessed.

A file lock is a control that prevents multiple processes or users from changing the same file at the same time. In collaboration systems, locks help preserve data integrity by ensuring one editor owns the file, or by making other actions wait until the lock is released. Some platforms use token-based locks, such as WebDAV locks, to track who may edit or unlock a resource.

In cyber security, lock handling matters because a flaw in ownership checks or unlock authorization can cause more than a simple glitch. Attackers may try to abuse broken lock logic to block access, disrupt teamwork, or force a file into a stuck state. Defenders look for repeated unlock failures, files that remain locked after a session ends, and unexpected changes in lock ownership. Good patching and careful access control help keep file locks working as both an availability safeguard and an integrity control.
