A file-hosting link is a URL that points to a file stored on an external service, where it can be downloaded or shared. In cyber incidents, such links may be used to distribute purportedly stolen data outside an organization’s normal systems and access controls.
Extortion groups may publish or send file-hosting links to pressure victims, journalists, or partners to retrieve alleged leaked material. A link is not proof that the files are authentic or that a breach occurred. Defenders should avoid opening unknown links on work devices, preserve the post as evidence, and have security staff assess any files in an isolated environment. If credentials may be exposed, verify and rotate them through approved processes.
