FERC is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, an independent U.S. agency that regulates aspects of the interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas, and oil, as well as wholesale electricity markets and certain hydropower projects. In electricity-sector cybersecurity, FERC’s regulatory role includes oversight connected to reliability standards for the bulk power system.
FERC matters to cyber security because regulated organizations may need to meet and demonstrate compliance with applicable reliability and security requirements. Reviews or warnings about compliance gaps can point to weaknesses in documentation, oversight, or control implementation; they do not, by themselves, prove that an organization was breached. For defenders, the practical response is to keep security controls verifiable, track remediation, and clearly assign responsibility for systems operated or supported by third parties.
