FedRAMP High

The highest federal cloud impact level for highly sensitive unclassified data, requiring strong controls and ongoing monitoring.

FedRAMP High is the highest federal cloud security baseline for services that process highly sensitive unclassified U.S. government data. It is not a product label; it is an authorization framework tied to a specific cloud service boundary. To reach this level, a provider must implement strong technical and administrative controls, produce evidence for those controls, and maintain continuous monitoring after authorization.

In cyber security, FedRAMP High matters because it raises the bar for identity management, logging, encryption, vulnerability handling, incident response, and configuration control. Defenders use it to reduce risk in cloud systems that support mission-critical workloads, while attackers may target the review boundary itself by abusing misconfigurations, weak privileged access, or supply-chain changes outside the approved scope. For buyers, the key question is whether the exact service in use is inside the authorized boundary and whether monitoring remains current as the system changes.
