Feature engineering is the process of turning raw data into model-ready signals. In practice, that means converting logs, transactions, timestamps, counts, ratios, categories, and trends into inputs an AI system can actually use. For retail forecasting, raw sales and inventory records may be transformed into features such as weekly demand, promotion flags, seasonality, or store-level averages.
In cyber security, feature engineering matters because the model is only as trustworthy as the features it sees. Attackers may try data poisoning, manipulation, or delayed feeds to distort engineered inputs and steer predictions away from reality. Defenders reduce this risk by validating sources, tracking data provenance, comparing features with raw records, and monitoring for drift or anomalies. Good feature engineering helps detection and prediction; weak feature engineering can turn a useful model into a blind spot.
