Failure analysis

The process of examining why a component did not meet expectations.

Failure analysis is the process of examining why a component, control, or system did not meet expectations. It goes beyond noting that something “failed” and asks what was measured, under what conditions, and whether the result can be reproduced. In security work, that means preserving logs, test results, configurations, and environmental details so later review can separate a real defect from a setup problem or one-off anomaly.

This matters in cyber security because attackers often hide behind ambiguity, while defenders rely on clear evidence to decide whether a control is broken, bypassed, or simply mis-tested. Failure analysis helps teams understand why a scanner missed a host, why a secure build was rejected, or why a safeguard behaved differently in production than in the lab. Done well, it turns a bad result into actionable knowledge and supports stronger verification, better root-cause analysis, and more reliable defenses.
