External validity is the degree to which findings from one dataset, lab test, or environment can be generalized to other users, systems, or settings. A result with high external validity still holds when the sample changes; a result with low external validity may only describe the specific collection conditions that produced it.
In cyber security, external validity matters when teams build detections, risk models, or chatbot analytics from limited data. A phishing classifier trained on one company’s email, or a safety model tuned on one interface, may fail when language, user behavior, or platform design changes. Attackers often benefit from this gap by shifting tactics across channels, regions, or victim groups. Defenders reduce the risk by testing across diverse samples, comparing environments, and treating metrics as context-dependent rather than universal truths.
