An extended display is a screen used as an additional monitor for another device, such as a laptop, desktop, or mobile system. Instead of acting as a standalone computer interface, it presents extra workspace for apps, windows, or dashboards. This can be useful when repurposing older smart displays or other hardware that still has a usable panel and video input or casting capability.
In cyber security, extended displays matter because they are often treated as harmless peripherals even when they still contain software, network features, microphones, cameras, or account ties from their original role. Attackers may abuse those leftover functions for surveillance, persistence, or unauthorized access, while defenders look for ways to disable unnecessary services, remove old pairings, and reduce trust in reused devices. A device used only as a monitor should be configured to do only that.
