Exposure mapping

checking internet-facing systems for services that may need review.

Exposure mapping is the process of identifying internet-facing systems, services, and entry points that are visible to outsiders. It helps security teams understand what is actually reachable from the public internet, including remote access portals, VPNs, web apps, cloud endpoints, and management interfaces that should not be exposed. The goal is to find services that need review, hardening, or removal before an attacker does.

This matters because many intrusions begin with exposed assets that were forgotten, misconfigured, or left unpatched. In ransomware and extortion cases, defenders often use exposure mapping to check whether a named target has risky services online, whether those services match known attack paths, and whether access logs show suspicious activity. Attackers also perform the same discovery step to build a list of likely entry points. Good exposure mapping supports faster incident response, better asset inventory, and fewer surprises when public claims appear before technical proof is confirmed.
