Exposure intelligence

Observations about how visible systems are to external scanning, useful for measuring attack surface.

Exposure intelligence is the practice of measuring how visible a system is to external scanning, search tools, and reconnaissance activity. It focuses on what an outsider can discover before any exploit is used: public IPs, open services, exposed management ports, and systems that respond to fingerprinting. In cyber security, this is a direct way to estimate attack surface.

It matters because many attacks begin with discovery, not malware. If a device is internet-exposed, an attacker can identify it, compare it against known vulnerabilities, and target weak remote access or default configurations. Defenders use exposure intelligence to find unnecessary public services, confirm that segmentation is working, and track whether hardening efforts actually reduce visibility. In OT environments, a drop in exposure can be positive, but it does not prove the device is patched or safe; it only shows that fewer systems are reachable from outside.
