An exposed network device is a router, camera, network-attached storage system, or other appliance that can be reached from the internet, often through remotely accessible services. Exposure does not automatically mean a device is compromised, but accessible services can create opportunities for attackers—especially when they have weak credentials, known vulnerabilities, or outdated firmware.
In real attacks, a compromised device may be used to relay traffic through its internet connection, making activity appear to come from the device’s owner or location. Defenders should disable unnecessary internet-facing services, restrict remote access, change default credentials, update firmware, and monitor outbound traffic for behavior inconsistent with the device’s role.
