Exposed API keys

Credentials left visible or poorly protected, making misuse more likely.

Exposed API keys are credentials that are left visible, stored insecurely, or shared where unauthorized people or software can find them. An API key often acts like a password for accessing cloud services, code platforms, or other remote tools, so exposure can quickly turn into misuse.

In cyber security, exposed keys matter because they can let an attacker impersonate a trusted application, read data, create resources, send requests, or incur costs under the victim’s account. They are commonly found in public code repositories, logs, configuration files, chat messages, screenshots, and copied snippets. Defenders reduce risk by scanning for secrets, using environment variables or secret managers, limiting key permissions, rotating credentials, and monitoring for unusual API activity. In AI and automation systems, the risk grows when tools or agents can search files and interact with secrets, because a visible key may be accessed, copied, or used without proper authorization.
