Exploitability verification

Testing whether a vulnerability can actually be used in context, not just whether it exists in theory.

Exploitability verification is the process of testing whether a reported vulnerability can actually be used in the target environment, not just whether the underlying flaw exists in code. A bug may be real on paper but unreachable in practice because of missing permissions, disabled features, network restrictions, input validation, or compensating controls. Verification helps security teams separate theoretical findings from issues that create real risk.

This matters because scanners and static analysis tools often produce large numbers of alerts, and attackers focus on the subset that can be weaponized. In defense, exploitability verification can involve reproducing the issue in a lab, checking code paths, confirming prerequisites, and measuring whether mitigations block abuse. In attack workflows, adversaries perform the same kind of validation to find vulnerabilities that are reliable, reachable, and worth chaining into an intrusion. Done well, exploitability verification improves prioritization, patch urgency, and remediation quality.
