Exploitability validation

Testing whether a weakness can actually be turned into an attack path.

Exploitability validation is the process of testing whether a discovered weakness can actually be turned into an attack path. A scanner may report a vulnerable service, misconfiguration, or exposed secret, but that does not always mean an attacker can reach it, execute code, or move deeper into the system. Validation checks the real conditions: network exposure, required privileges, input handling, segmentation, and compensating controls.

This matters because security teams have limited time. If every finding is treated as equally dangerous, triage slows down and critical issues can be missed. In practice, exploitability validation helps defenders prioritize real risk, reduce false positives, and confirm which fixes are urgent. Attackers use the same idea in reverse: they look for weaknesses that are not just present, but reachable and chainable into a working intrusion. Defenders often perform validation in isolated sandboxes or lab environments so they can test safely before patching, blocking, or escalating.
