Expectation management

Setting realistic goals for what AI should improve, so time saved can be translated into measurable results.

Expectation management is the practice of setting realistic goals for what an AI system should improve, and how those improvements will be measured. In cyber security, this matters because AI is often introduced to speed up triage, summarize alerts, review code, or support analysts. If the expected outcome is vague, teams may feel more efficient without seeing better detection, lower risk, or less workload.

Good expectation management turns “AI will help” into specific targets such as faster incident response, fewer false positives, or better coverage of repetitive tasks. It also helps security teams avoid dangerous assumptions, like expecting a tool to replace human review or to understand every edge case. In real defenses, clear expectations guide testing, logging, access control, and post-deployment review. In attacks, poor expectation management can be exploited when defenders trust AI outputs too much or rush deployment without validating limits.
