EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION is a Windows crash error that occurs when a process tries to read from or write to memory it does not own or is no longer valid. The fault may come from a normal software bug, a bad driver, a corrupted object, or a race condition in low-level code.
In cyber security, this error matters because memory-access crashes often point to unstable code paths that attackers look for and defenders investigate. Malicious input can trigger access violations in parsers, plugins, or drivers, causing denial of service or exposing memory-safety flaws that may be exploitable. Security teams use crash reports, minidumps, and telemetry to distinguish a harmless compatibility problem from a possible exploitation attempt. When access violations start appearing after an update or around device software, they are a strong sign that the system stack needs compatibility testing and patch review.
