Evidence validation

checking logs and artifacts before accepting impact claims.

Evidence validation is the process of checking logs, forensic artifacts, and other reliable records before accepting a claim about a cyber incident’s impact. It helps distinguish verified findings—such as confirmed access to specific files—from assertions that have not been independently substantiated.

In ransomware cases, threat actors may claim to have stolen data or publish a victim listing to create pressure. Those statements alone do not prove that access or exfiltration occurred. Defenders should preserve relevant logs, review identity and file-access records, and compare findings across available sources. Clear validation supports accurate incident scoping and helps organizations communicate what is known, alleged, or still uncertain.
