An eSIM QR code is a scannable activation token used to provision a mobile subscription profile onto a device. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, a user scans the code and the phone downloads carrier credentials and service settings over the air.
This matters in cyber security because the code can function like a secret. If an attacker obtains it, they may try to activate the victim’s line on another device, intercept calls or SMS-based one-time codes, and support account takeover or fraud. For defenders, eSIM activation artifacts should be treated as sensitive provisioning data: limit access, make tokens short-lived and single-use, monitor activation attempts, and protect carrier and customer-support workflows from social engineering.
