Escalation channel

An internal reporting path for raising safety concerns so they can be reviewed and tracked.

An escalation channel is an internal reporting path used to raise a security or safety concern to the people who can investigate and act on it. It may route issues from an engineer to a manager, security team, risk committee, or executive owner, with the goal of recording the concern, assigning responsibility, and tracking resolution.

In cyber security, escalation channels matter because many failures are organizational before they are technical. A well-run channel helps staff report phishing, abuse, unsafe configurations, policy violations, or model-risk findings without having to go outside the company. In mature defenses, the channel creates an audit trail: what was reported, who reviewed it, what mitigations were approved, and whether the issue was closed or deferred. Attackers can exploit weak escalation by taking advantage of ignored warnings, missing ownership, or slow decision-making. Defenders use clear escalation paths to keep incidents, vulnerabilities, and high-risk discoveries from disappearing into informal communication.
