Enterprise attack surface

The collection of systems, users, and services that can be targeted by attackers.

An enterprise attack surface is the collection of systems, users, devices, applications, services, and data that an attacker could try to reach or exploit. It includes internet-facing servers and cloud services, as well as identities, email accounts, endpoints, and internal permissions that may enable access to more sensitive resources.

The attack surface matters because each exposed or poorly protected element can provide an entry point or help an intruder move through an organization. In real attacks, a phishing message may lead to a compromised account, which can then be used to access shared services or data. Defenders reduce risk by inventorying assets, limiting unnecessary access, patching systems, monitoring activity, and connecting security signals across identity, messaging, devices, and data. Broader visibility can reveal gaps, but combining tools alone does not guarantee that the attack surface is covered.
