eMMC

Embedded flash storage built into a device rather than inserted as a removable card.

eMMC, or embedded MultiMediaCard, is flash storage built into a device’s hardware instead of being used as a removable card. It combines memory and a controller in a compact package, which makes it cheap, small, and common in phones, consoles, routers, and other embedded systems.

In cyber security, eMMC matters because it can hold operating systems, credentials, logs, and user data even after a device is retired or wiped incompletely. Attackers may extract or clone eMMC chips from stolen or discarded hardware to recover data or analyze firmware. Defenders treat it as sensitive storage: they use secure erase methods, full-device encryption, and proper destruction or decommissioning procedures. In forensics and hardware repair, eMMC is also a frequent target for chip-off recovery and board-level repair work.
