Embedded board

a compact circuit board designed to perform a specific task.

An embedded board is a compact circuit board built to carry out a specific task, often with limited power, memory, and interfaces. It may include a microcontroller or processor, storage, sensors, networking, and sometimes a screen or touchscreen in a single package. Unlike a general-purpose computer, it is usually designed to run one appliance, controller, or appliance-like function reliably and with minimal overhead.

In cyber security, embedded boards matter because they are common in routers, access control panels, cameras, industrial devices, and maker projects that later become connected products. Their small size can hide risk: weak firmware, hardcoded credentials, exposed debug ports, and insecure update paths are frequent attack surfaces. Defenders should inventory these devices, restrict physical access, verify firmware integrity, and disable unused services. Attackers also target embedded boards because compromising one can provide persistence, local control, or a foothold deeper into a network.
