Edit throttling

A control that limits how quickly users or bots can modify a wiki or similar platform.

Edit throttling is a rate-control mechanism that limits how many changes a user, account, IP address, or bot can make to a wiki or other collaborative platform in a given time. It can slow posting, force pauses between edits, or temporarily block further updates when activity looks abnormal.

In cyber security, edit throttling helps reduce spam, vandalism, credential-abuse bursts, and automated abuse that tries to use writable pages as a coordination channel. It is especially useful when bots or agentic systems can generate high-volume, low-friction writes. Defenders combine throttling with spam filters, account reputation, and logging to spot automation and contain damage. Attackers may try to distribute edits across accounts or timing windows to evade limits, so throttling works best as part of layered abuse prevention.
