ECOS is the operating system that runs on HPE EdgeConnect gateways. It provides the device-level functions needed to move traffic, apply networking policy, manage interfaces, and support administrative features such as logging, configuration, and access control.
In cyber security, ECOS matters because flaws in the underlying OS can affect both the gateway itself and the broader SD-WAN environment it helps control. If an attacker exploits a vulnerable web interface, API, or service running on ECOS, the result may be privilege escalation, configuration changes, or remote code execution. Defenders reduce this risk by keeping ECOS updated, limiting management access to trusted networks, reviewing logs for suspicious changes, and treating gateway software as part of the control plane, not just a network appliance.
