Downstream service

A connected system that may be affected when a core service is disrupted.

A downstream service is a connected system that depends on another, upstream service for data, authentication, notifications, or other functions. If the upstream component slows down, fails, or is compromised, the downstream service may also misbehave, even if it was not directly attacked. This dependency chain is common in cloud platforms, APIs, payment flows, identity systems, and wallet infrastructure.

Downstream services matter in cyber security because attackers often target one trusted component to reach many others. A single breached API, misconfigured message queue, or poisoned configuration source can trigger outages, data exposure, or fraudulent actions across dependent systems. Defenders map these dependencies to set trust boundaries, limit blast radius, and monitor for cascading failure. In practice, strong authentication, least privilege, segmentation, and input validation help protect downstream services when a core service is disrupted or abused.
