Downstream risk

possible harm that can extend to connected customers or services.

Downstream risk is the possibility that harm spreads beyond the initial target to customers, partners, or services connected to that target. In cyber security, it matters because a compromise is often not confined to one network: shared credentials, remote support tools, APIs, managed services, and integrations can carry an attacker’s access farther than expected.

This term is common when an IT provider, cloud vendor, or other shared-service organization is involved. If such a provider is breached, connected clients may face service disruption, data exposure, or unauthorized access even if their own defenses are strong. Defenders reduce downstream risk by limiting privileged access, segmenting environments, reviewing vendor-linked accounts, monitoring remote-management paths, and testing incident response with suppliers. In extortion cases, a public victim claim may be only an alert, but it can still justify checking whether connected systems or customers could be affected.
