Downstream enrichment

Additional analysis added to a vulnerability record after initial publication, often for defender use.

Downstream enrichment is the additional analysis attached to a vulnerability record after its initial publication. The raw record may only include an identifier, a short description, and basic affected-version data. Enrichment adds defender-focused context such as exploitability, severity, proof-of-concept availability, internet exposure, asset mappings, patch status, and links to related advisories or malware activity.

This matters because security teams rarely act on a bare CVE alone. Enriched records help scanners, ticketing systems, and risk dashboards sort what needs immediate attention from what can wait. In real defense workflows, enrichment can be manual, coming from researchers and threat intel teams, or automated, coming from vulnerability management platforms. Attackers benefit indirectly when enrichment reveals which flaws are widely deployed or actively exploited, but defenders rely on it to prioritize remediation and reduce noise. Good downstream enrichment turns a simple vulnerability label into actionable intelligence.
