Documentation Worker

An automated process that generates or handles package documentation and may process package-controlled content.

A documentation worker is an automated service in a package registry or build pipeline that generates, formats, indexes, or publishes package documentation. It may read files supplied by the package author, such as README content, metadata, templates, or examples, and turn them into web pages or searchable output.

In security terms, this matters because the worker can process package-controlled content at scale and with elevated trust. If input validation is weak, attackers may use it for data collection, trigger server-side request behavior, inject malformed markup, or test how the registry handles untrusted fields. In supply-chain abuse, documentation workers are attractive because they sit beside publication workflows and can be reached without compromising a developer machine. Defenses include strict sanitization, sandboxing, least-privilege execution, output encoding, and treating newly published package content as untrusted until it has been checked.
