DLT

distributed ledger technology, a system for maintaining records across multiple nodes instead of one central database.

DLT, or distributed ledger technology, is a way of keeping records across multiple nodes instead of one central database. Each participant holds a synchronized copy of the ledger, and new entries are accepted only when the network’s rules and consensus checks are satisfied. In cybersecurity, DLT matters because it can improve integrity, auditability, and resilience: no single server failure or database compromise can rewrite history on its own. However, DLT is not automatically secure. The system still depends on strong cryptography, correct software, trustworthy key management, and reliable governance.

In real attacks, adversaries often target the weakest points around the ledger rather than the ledger itself: stolen private keys, compromised nodes, vulnerable smart contracts, or weak permission controls. A permissioned DLT can defend by restricting access, using validated identities, and logging every change for later review. Public DLT networks also face risks such as consensus abuse or transaction spam. For defenders, DLT is useful when the goal is to create records that are harder to tamper with and easier to verify across organizations.
