A distributed workforce is a user population that works from multiple locations, such as offices, homes, branches, and mobile environments, rather than from a single protected network. This matters in cyber security because traditional perimeter controls no longer see all user traffic in one place, so security teams must enforce the same policy wherever a user connects.
In practice, a distributed workforce pushes organizations toward centrally managed controls like secure web gateways, zero trust access, and cloud-delivered security services. These tools can inspect web requests, block phishing and malware destinations, and apply consistent rules based on identity, device posture, and risk. Without that consistency, attackers can exploit weaker home networks, unmanaged devices, and inconsistent filtering to reach users or move through cloud apps.
